CAMOGLI AND SAN FRUTTUOSO
In the splendid setting of the Golfo Paradiso, the ancient Via Aurelia and the motorway A12 connect Genoa to the Eastern Riviera of Levante.
It takes about twenty minutes from Genova to reach Camogli.
This historic fishing village keeps intact its little port with many fishing boats and nets hanging to dry in the sun. Next to the small port, you should find the most significant sites such as the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the castle stronghold still equipped with cannons.
What remains forever imprinted in the memory of the visitor is the promenade along the sea where the pastel-colored facades of the fishermen’s homes reflect the sunlight.
Here more than elsewhere, the maritime tradition is still alive and present; in fact Camogli was called the “city of a thousand white sailing ships“.
Every year in May the famous Fish Festival fills Camogli with many tourists who are attracted by the gigantic frying pan (the diameter is 4 meters) that fries tons of fish the spectators.
From Camogli it is possible to reach San Fruttuoso by an excursion boat (under good conditions of navigability).
The boat trip lasts about half an hour, it passes along the Tonnarellaarea (an ancient method to catch tuna fish) and it skirts the Portofino promontory, We then arrive at the wilderness area of San Fruttuoso’s bay, where we may admire the historyic Benedictine abbey.
It has an imposing facade, an interesting dome, the church bell tower and the Doria family’s tower.
Today they represent an important architectural complex, protected by the Italian Environmental Fund (FAI)
